Wallaroos captain Chris Ross says she’s eagerly awaiting the chance to land her first hit of the IRB Women’s Rugby World Cup when Australia’s campaign kicks off against Wales on Friday in Surrey, England.
The towering lock says her Wallaroos teammates have had the chance to adjust to the UK timezone and are working together to complete the final touches on their preparations before tackling their northern hemisphere opponents Wales at 2pm on Friday (11pm AEST) at Surrey Sports Park.
The match will be telecast on FoxSports 2 at 7am on Saturday.
“We had our first real training session yesterday and we were all itching to get into it, things are really starting to come together well,” Ross said on Thursday.
“The set piece is looking terrific, we’ve got a strong core group of girls that have been around since the last World Cup and we’ve been able to build on our combinations.
“We’re expecting Wales to be a tough opponent, we’re at the World Cup, each country will be fighting for that victory tooth and nail.
“The girls and I have been talking about it, we can’t wait to get the first hit on and to kick things into action.“
Wallaroos coach John Manenti has unveiled two debutants and a new halves pairing in his starting XV.
Australian Services frontrower Caroline Vakalahi is poised to make her debut after unseating last year’s first choice loose head Danielle Meskell, who will start from the bench, while Shannon Parry will earn her first cap at flanker with versatile backrower Alexandra Hargreaves slotting in at the back of the scrum at No.8.
Manenti has also selected a new halves pairing with Ili Batibasaga named at No.9 in the place of Sevens World Cup-winning captain Cheryl Soon who will has been named on the bench for the first of three Tests which Australian will play in the coming eight days.
Batibasaga will team up with star playmaker Tui Ormsby who has been in and around the side for over 13 years, making her the most experienced Wallaroo in history.
“We have good competition within the group and that’s positive,” Manenti said.
“Ili (Batibasaga) has earned first shot at scrumhalf against Wales with Cheryl coming off the bench and we’ll assess it from there.
“We’re very pleased with our preparation but we don’t know much about Wales.
“Traditionally they’re a passionate side and we’re expecting them to be very physical.”
Australia could become the first nation to unite the Sevens and 15-a-side Women's Rugby World Cup titles but have been handed a challenging assignment at the tournament which runs from August 20 to September 5.
After the Cup opener against Wales, the Wallaroos will take on defending champions New Zealand (24 August) and southern hemisphere heavyweights South Africa (28 August).
The 2010 Women’s Rugby World Cup is the sixth edition of the event and the third in which Australia has competed. After finishing fifth in 1998 and again in 2002, the Wallaroos finished seventh at the last WRWC in Canada in 2006, where New Zealand beat England in the decider and France finished third.

The Women's Rugby World Cup is the premier international competition in rugby union for women. The tournament is organised by the sport's governing body the International Rugby Board (IRB). The championships are currently held every four years with the next event scheduled to take place in England in 2010.
The first Women's Rugby World Cup was held in 1991, and won by the United States, though it and the subsequent 1994 competition were not officially sanctioned by the IRB. It was not until the 1998 tournament held in the Netherlands that the tournament received official IRB backing. The current world champions, and the most successful team, are New Zealand.
History
Prior to the first Women's Rugby World Cup officially sanctioned by the International Rugby Board there had been three previous tournaments of a similar nature. The first of these was an event held in August 1990 in New Zealand. Though not considered a world cup, the tournament was referred to as the World Rugby Festival for Women. The competition included teams representing the United States, the Netherlands, Russia, and the hosts, New Zealand - who emerged as winners after defeating the United States in the final.
The first tournament referred to as the Women's Rugby World Cup was held in 1991 and hosted by Wales. Twelve countries were divided into four groups of three. The United States, against expectations, took the first championship with a 19-6 victory over England.[3] In the Plate competition Canada prevailed over Spain 18-4. Following the first tournament it was decided to move the tournament schedule to the year prior to the next men's world cup therefore reducing the quadrennial cycle to just three years.
The next event was originally scheduled to take place in Amsterdam but ended up being moved to Scotland. Eleven countries competed in the tournament with the English meeting the United States in the final for the second time however, in this instance England emerged as winners.
The 1998 tournament became the first women's world cup officially sanctioned by the International Rugby Board. Amsterdam, who were originally scheduled to host the previous world cup, hosted the largest ever tournament with all matches played at the new National Rugby Centre in the city’s west end.[5] The tournament also saw a record sixteen teams compete. New Zealand, who withdrew from the previous tournament, also competed. The final saw New Zealand defeat the United States and claim their first world cup title.
The next event was taken to Spain in 2002, where New Zealand, won the title for the second time. The 2006 world cup took place in Edmonton, Canada, and was the first major international rugby union tournament and women's world cup held in North America. New Zealand defeated England in the final to win their third successive world cup title.
In 2008 a record four countries expressed interest in hosting the 2010 world cup. After considering bids from the Rugby Football Union, the German Rugby Federation, the Kazakhstan Rugby Union and South African Rugby Union the IRB announced that the 2010 event will take place in England.[7] The Rugby Football Union for Women (RFUW) then announced that the tournament is to be staged in west London, with the final to be played at The Stoop.
